Listening but not really hearing

Without question most of us really want to listen to our prospects, our clients… our market. And in many cases we have the tools and systems set up to listen.

BUT…

Are we really hearing them?

There’s a great line in the movie “The Hunt For Red October.”  Maybe you remember it.

Jack Ryan, looking at a radar screen, asks “What are those destroyers doing?”

The Captain says, “They’re listening with sonar, looking for the Red October. Funny thing though–they’re moving so fast, they could

Strategy is all about making tough choices

In an article from Fast Company, Michael Porter, noted professor and management guru shreds his perspective on strategy. Some really good stuff…

There’s a fundamental distinction between strategy and operational effectiveness. Strategy is about making choices, trade-offs; it’s about deliberately choosing to be different. Operational effectiveness is about things that you really shouldn’t have to make choices on; it’s about what’s good for everybody and about what every business should be doing.

So how are you choosing to be DIFFERENT?

Are My Hinges Rusting Shut?

From a book I read a while back, this is a paragraph that struck me. I wrote it down immediately and it continues to remind me about keeping the hinges well lubricated.

“I’m not nearly afraid of dying as I am of the hinges inside my mind and soul rusting closed. I am desperate to keep them open, because I think that if they close, that’s one’s first death, the loss of hope, curiosity, and possibility, the spiritual death. After that,

Extremely Simple Explanation of Social Media

In response to a query on an industry forum I am part of, here were my thoughts on social media.

Question: I don’t want to visit Barnes & Noble for another “____ for Idiots” book. Can you provide a simple explanation.

Answer.

Nope, sorry. No simple explanation. Even the “Idiots” guides are 260 pages long and barely do the subject justice. So here is a “extremely brief” synopsis based on your request.

Think of two styles of web media/marketing.

Search, which has become the

The Conversation PRISM and Social Media

As you choose to become a personality marketer for your business, you have to determine where exactly you want to focus your attention and spend your time. You can’t possibly do it all. There are far too many social sites to conquer.

My first recommendation is to be clear on your strategic marketing objectives as they help you determine where you should focus. Then determine which of the social media platforms logically align with your objectives.

Twitter, Facebook and Other Social Diversions

It’s now main stream.

Take for instance VW.  Instead of sending commercial viewers to their own site, VW is sending them to their Facebook fan page.

“All the cool kids are doing it,”  a client of mine said recently.  He wanted to get started.

I’ve been hearing more and more requests for it recently.  if everyone is doing it, so should they is the assumption.

BUT most are coming at it the wrong way.  Most seem to come to these social media tools as

The Increasing Complexity of Web Marketing

As you may or may not know, my team manages web marketing for almost 50 clients.  We have systematic processes for much of what we do, but we also employ some secret sauces – yes, more than one – to get the results we do. And rather than hide the secret sauce, I’ll openly admit what they are.

We Put In The Hours

Nothing magical in this. But most people don’t want to spend the time required to create the result

Coming back to life

Just a short note to say how much I  have missed being in a creative zone.  This last year has been one of tremendous change.

I started a new business in the US, started the immigration process, in June I got married to Becky and moved to San Diego.  In that time frame the business has grown leaps and bounds.  And much to my own dismay took me from doing what I love best… seeking really cool ideas, exploring,  trying things

A Simple Way To Get Publicity

It’s not as hard as you might think to get some great local publicity.

Today I was a guest on a local TV show on the CTV station in my Canadian hometown of Kitchener/Waterloo. The key is not to just get on the show, it’s to leverage it after the fact. Take a look at my short video as I explain more.

PRISMgives

Although it has been live for a week or more now, PRISMgives is cued up and ready for primetime.

My team and I at Flourish Press completed this website as a way to sponsor the RIM industry 1st ever charity event. The event is a cross country motorcycle ride across the US after the International Conference in May in Daytona Beach.

This year the goal of the ride is to support every kid in the world eating a healthy meal each day.
