Twitter, Facebook and Other Social Diversions

It’s now main stream.

Take for instance VW.  Instead of sending commercial viewers to their own site, VW is sending them to their Facebook fan page.

“All the cool kids are doing it,” a client of mine said recently. He wanted to get started.

I’ve been hearing more and more requests for it recently. If everyone is doing it, so should they is the assumption.

BUT most are coming at it the wrong way. Most seem to come to these social media tools as another way to “sell” their service. As a way to have an immediate “prospect” base to talk to.

The real secret of success in social media is about listening more than it is talking. It is engaging people in conversations, not speaking at them. Then it is sharing with other people things that are meaningful to them. Often that means pointing them away from you, not to you.

And in that, you find those who are attracted to what you have to offer.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Seems to me this is a great day to practice social media skills.

Keep quiet and listen… and whatever you do, don’t create an opportunity for a relative to say to you.

“What do you mean by that.”
